AASM mails out the quarterly Montage to over 6,000 members. Through this publication, the Communications department sells third party ads and provides useful information for active practitioners, researchers, students and facilities.
In 2024 I was handed this ongoing project, and in 2025 I was ready to give the Montage a facelift.
Typesetting print collateral includes the challenge of handling a ton of text. I looked at magazine graphic design projects online with dismay, as all the layouts were perfect and just to the designer’s liking (easy to do when you have lorem ipsum and not a realistic amount of text). Therefore, I decided to take pictures of layouts that inspired me of the most recent issues of several magazines at the library.

With the current magazine style trends in mind, I updated the Montage to better reflect AASM’s present branding, grab the audience with a clean, light and refined look and provide a strict set of rules for issues going forward, such as font sizes allowed. I also pushed more for higher resolution images, so the layouts themselves tell the member what section they are reading rather than the color or pattern of the page border.

Now I have an easy to follow InDesign template with set paragraph/character/table/cell styles, column widths, fonts, headers, footers, callouts, quotes and other assets. Consistency and a clean layout are key to a successful rollout of each issue.
